Handmade in Bozeman
A Rocky Mountain hat doesn’t arrive at our shop finished.
We start with a raw fur felt body. From there, each hat is blocked, sanded, fitted with a sweatband, flanged, shaped and finished by hand in our Bozeman workshop.
Many of the tools and techniques we use belong to an earlier era of hatmaking—not because they’re old-fashioned, but because they still produce the kind of hat we want to make.
Choose the Felt That Fits How You’ll Wear It
Every Rocky Mountain hat starts with fur felt. The material you choose changes the feel, durability, weather resistance and price of the finished hat.
Rabbit Fur Felt
Lightweight, comfortable and refined. Rabbit felt is an excellent entry into a handmade fur-felt hat and works especially well when you want a softer, lighter feel.
Beaver Blend
Blending beaver with other fur creates a felt with greater durability, weather resistance and shape retention while keeping the hat practical for regular wear.
100% Beaver
Our traditional premium felt. Beaver is prized for its resilience, ability to hold shape, weather resistance and longevity, while developing a distinctive feel with years of wear.
A Montana Hat Shop Since 1990
Rocky Mountain Hat Company began in 1990 when John Morris Sr. left a career in physics and started making hats for the working cowboys around him.
His son, John Morris Jr., joined him, and together they spent decades refining the craft, fitting customers and building hats one at a time in Montana.
Today, a third generation of the Morris family is carrying that work forward.
The shop has changed over the years.
